WHERE | On this day, in 1858, Lavinia Lloyd Dock was born.

WHERE | She was born and raised in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW WHO SHE IS | Everyone should know who Lavinia Lloyd Dock is because of the part she played in the history of the study of Nursing. She devoted her life to educating others on the importance of medical standards in nursing. With the help of Robb and Mary Adelaide Nutting, Dock founded the American Societyof Superintendents of Training Schools for Nurses. This would later become the National League of Nurses. After her retirement from nursing, Dock devoted her life to the National Women's Party. There she participated in several protests for women's rights that resulted in the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote.
